Advertising the Selling of Your Car

When it comes to trying to sell a car, there are a number of things you will need to keep in mind.  Even if this was the best car you have had in your life, you are going to need to keep your personal feelings aside.  One of the very important parts of getting your car sold is the preparation of it.  Prior to placing your advertisement for the car, you should do some important things for preparation.

Steps:

First – Clean

The truth is that people are always more apt to purchase a vehicle when it is clean as opposed to when it is not.  This not only refers to the outside of the vehicle, but the inside as well.  Make sure all cleaning is done in a very thorough fashion.

Second – Maintain

Maintenance is a very important aspect of any vehicle.  Even if your car is running fine, getting a full service maintenance job done to it prior to listing it for sale will be very beneficial to you in getting your car sold.

Third -  Paperwork

Make sure that you have all of the important paperwork for the car neat and organized for those who may be wanting to purchase it to look through.  This means the title and registration if at all possible, but it also means all of the paperwork for any repairs and maintenance that has been done to it as well.

Where to Advertise

There are a great number of things that you are going to need to think about when you are planning to place an advertisement for selling your car.  One of those is how to advertise.  There is the option of advertising in your local newspaper, but not everyone reads the paper.  There is the option of advertising online with different sites, but not everyone will visit those either. There is also the option of local and national auto trade publications.  Most of these will advertise in print as well as on the web for you.  The best route to go would be to advertise with all three types of ads, but if you cannot then you are going to have to weigh your options and choose one.

Abbreviations to Know

When you are placing an advertisement, most of the time you will be paying based on how many characters or words the ad is long.  This means that abbreviations can save you some money in your ad.  It is also a lot easier to use many of these abbreviations than it is to have to spell it all out over and over if you are advertising online.  If you are wanting to know more than are listed here, then you can always look online.  Here are a few good ones to start with though.

  • Or Best Offer is OBO
  • Good Condition is GC
  • Very Good Condition is VGC
  • Four Wheel Drive is 4WD
  • Rear Wheel Drive is RWD
  • Front Wheel Drive is FWD
  • Alloy Wheels is A/Wheels
  • Cruise Control is C/Con
  • Full Service History is FSH
  • Central Locking is C/L
  • Electric Windows is E/W

The best way to advertise a car is to keep it concise and make sure that you get your point across easily.  This is best done in four steps.

First -  A Great Title

Make sure that you find a single phrase that expresses it all for your title.

Second – Describe it Right

This is where any potential buyers will find out the information that they are wanting to know about the vehicle, so make sure that you get all the necessary information in there without getting too detailed.  Be completely honest, but at the same time you should be trying to play on all the positives of the vehicle.  Also list any information on contacting you in this area.

Third – Photos

There are only about 10% of people who look at advertisements that are placed that will actually still look if there is no photo available.  This is why it is necessary that you have a photo of your vehicle in the advertisement.  If you are advertising in print, then pick a photo that shows off your vehicle as much as possible.  If you are advertising on the web, then you can have multiple photos, and you should show all the great things about the vehicle that you can.

Fourth – Money

Make sure that you are not trying to sell your car in a price range that is not acceptable.  Do some homework on this.  If you are wanting to sell a car for more than it is worth, then nobody is going to even pay attention to your ad.  If you are trying to sell it for less than what it is worth, then most will think that there is something wrong with it that you are not saying.  Since most potential buyers will try to negotiate the price with you, you should start with a price that is slightly higher than what you are really wanting to get for it.
